Theology Thursday: Preaching in the Early Church
In our whirlwind tour of church history, we’re seeing how the early Christians heard and taught the Word of God. The Scriptures were the standard for everything. Without the preaching and teaching of the Scriptures, we have no basis for anything except our own personal opinion. This is why it is of the utmost importance for a church to value and study God’s Word above all else.
Professor Michael Haykin writes about the church fathers in Rediscovering the Church Fathers: Who They Were and How They Shaped the Church. He writes and lectures on theology and church history. In this lecture, he explains how preaching was a major force in the life of the early church. He reminds us that even though preaching is out of favor in our culture, we need to remember that it is necessary for conversion and growth.
